TWP 1500 Series 5 Gallons Deck Stain
help. the crew that applied my twp cedartone stain used minwax wood filler on many knots and wood pecker holes. it looks like somebody took a paint gun to my house. as it turns out this product does not work and ruined projects
the crew bought some other stain to go over the filler and it helped some but the filler just does not take stain like it is advertised to be and it keeps coming back. as of now they’re going to try expresso stain to cover it up but i’m sure it will fail as well.
here are the pics.
are my options really only trying to blend the same shade brown paint over these spots?
the first pic is without the stain on it yet.
I would really like to see pictures of the different color options on different types of wood. Anybody know if there are any on the interwebs anywhere? Link?

How long does TWP 1500 last in an unopened 5 gallon container? I have a container that is two years old.
See here: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
We just cleaned, brightened and stained our 1 year old Cedar Deck along with one coat of 1500 pecan stain this past week. What are the normal maintenance requirements to keep the deck looking
new? Does it need to be done on a yearly basis?
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Every 2-3 after is normal.
Newly built deck. Treated pine wood has been out for almost 3 months. Will applying 1500 stain now be ok or does the wood need to dry out more. Also best items for application process (roller, brush etc?)
Hello, see this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use stain pads or brushes for applying: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/application-tools/brushes-stain-pads
hi,
i was wondering what steps i need to do.
aprox 40yr old vertical cedar. i don’t think there was anything put on it but i do not know. in some spots where there was once more shade it’s black charcoal in some areas…and in other spots with water run off you can see the lighter color brown.and in some spots it seems to be dry brittle grey. not to mention some spots have small green algae on it. and 1 side is fried from the sun and needs to be replaced completely
what cleaner/stripper do i need? and how much for aprox 3200sq feet..
will this work? how much will come clean? or will the pressure wash folks have to blast it with their own solution?
also,….would any semi transparent color be better than others for me as well?
the below pics are some of the better looking sides
You do not need to strip this but clean this. Use this kit while pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
You will need about 4 of the kits for 3200 sq. feet. Any color that you like will work for you for the TWP 1500 stain. That is your preference.
i really want to make the wood as light as possible, and not have it turn out dark brown before i stain. could you possibly tell me how light it will get by looking at my pics and surmising with the restore a deck?
With the prep kits and pressure washing, all the gray should be removed down to the bare wood. It will be much lighter.
Meant to also indicate that I’d like to have as much UV protection as possible…while trying to preserve the natural look.
Try the Honetone 1515 color.
I have a newly installed cedar fence and want to try to preserve the natural look of the wood as much as possible. What color stain would be recommended?
I live in California. I want to purchase (2) 5 gallon drums of 101 Cedertone stain. How much would it cost out the door?
For CA, you will need the TWP 1501 Cedartone. Cost is $194.95 per pail with free shipping and no sales tax. You can order them right on this page.
Had deck power washed and stripped. There is a mix of new and old wood. The new wood furred and they sanded prior to staining, ut there are some new boards that are still furred and were stained anyway. Will the stain hold?
The contractor also wants to apply another light coat (one plus weeks after) because it looks like stain really soaked in on newer boards.
Also, the water does not seem to bead when it rains. I was told that it should. Is this O.K.?
TWP being breathable does not bead like a care wax but sheds water. How “new” is the new wood? Did you season the new wood and prep? Pictures would help.
I applied 1500 series over the weekend to a pool deck with the pool cover on. Stain got through the cover in a few areas and stained the outer white rim of the pool. I tried mineral spirits but it doesn’t seem to be budging. Can you recommend something that might remove the stain? Deck looks great, the pool looks terrible. Thanks.
Try a graffiti remover cleaner from your local paint store and pressure washing.
I use Goof Off and a hard bristled toothbrush or the brush that comes with an upholstery cleaner to get it off vinyl siding. Works good especially if the stain is relatively new. Will work on older stains but may take more than one attempt.
The twp 1500 series states that stain should not be applied if rain is predicted within 48 hours. My question is since its very hard to predict pop up showers for the weather people, what is the damage if ther happens to be a quick showere pass by say one day after applying stain?
It should not harm the finish if it has 12-24 hours to dry.
I have a 5 year old unopened bucket of TWP 1500 in Rustic. It has been in my basement and is still in the plastic as well. It’s been sealed well. Is this stain still good?
Hard to say. Open it and look for any thick clumping or skinning of the stain. If not and it mixes with 100% consistency, then it should be okay.
Does the 150-200 foot coverage include the 2nd wet on wet coat?
No. Coverage for two coats applied we on wet is about 100-125 sq feet per gallon.
Can the 1500 be used with sashco big stretch caulk
Not sure as we have never tried it. It will not “stain” the caulk” so it blends.
I have a five year old pressure treated pine deck. It was originally stained with TWP and its ready for another application. I still have the original pail in my basement. My question is what prep do I need to do before I apply new stain?
Prep with this: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Serious mold issues on eaves on mid-century modern home. Originally painted with Sikkens 078 Natural wood stain (1 step). What would be the best TWP?
The Sikkens does need to be removed fully first. How depends on which version of Sikkens is on there? Once fully removed, use the TWP 1500 Series.
Used a 50 /50 mix of 1530 Natural and 1520 Pecan last year on my soffits. Loved how it covered and ease of use. Now notice some areas have a sheen and others areas don’t. Can i give it another coat so it all has a sheen ?
TWP is not supposed to have a sheen and that means you over applied it in those areas and that can lead to premature product failure. We would not suggest adding more.
Ok, this may be obvious to most, but is the coverage per gallon listed with one coat or two coats? And follow up question is there any issue with “waiting” to get more shipped if you needed another coat?
One coat for the coverage. If doing second a coat it needs to be applied wet on wet, not a week later: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
Hi! I need a clear stain, no color. Is 1530 the right one?
The 1530 Natural is not clear. You would want the TWP 1500 Clear. It is an option in the drop-down color choices.
I need UV protection though, so what’s the closest color then? Our deck is located on the 2nd level without any shade at all.
Honeytone 1515 is the lightest tint with UV protection.
I just had a new pressure treated pine deck built in Georgia. How long should I wait to stain?
See this article: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
What’s the difference between the 1500 twp and 100 ?
https://www.twpstain.com/difference-between-twp-100-and-1500-series
Has anyone use 1503 (Dark Oak) or 1504 (Black Walnut)? Pictures if possible, hard to imagine from swatch above. Thanks
See here: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
OMG thank you, this surely helps…NOW which one do I like better. OYE the decisions lol
The 1500 should be ok if you follow all the deck cleaning and prep steps. Using the Restore a deck stripper and brightener have always worked well for me.
Our deck is over 30 years old, would the 1500 series be ok or should I just go with a solid type coverage as opposed to transparent or semi transparent
The TWP 1500 would work well.
We do have some areas that are rotting even though its pressure treated, hoping its still ok
whats most popular color?
Cedartone 1501.
Hello I’m just checking to see if there will be a spring sale on Twp stain this year.
There is not one at this point. That may change but it is not in the works at this time.
What caulk would you recommend to best match color to either the Dark Oak or Black Walnut? Would you apply caulk before or after staining with TWP 1500 series? This is for new construction- logs have not been stained yet.
You would caulk first. We do not have colors of caulk that we would suggest to match TWP colors. You would have to test this on your own.
So I have a front porch ‘deck’ that I stained with 1501 cedar about 7 years ago and it needs to be redone. I was planning to power-wash with water and also the gemini kit. I have some columns and house siding with painted hardiplank below. Will the gemini kit cause problems when it inevitably washes down the side of the house/columns? Including a picture for reference. When I did it years ago I put up tarps to prevent but it was a big hassle and neighbors complained it was an eye-sore (left it up for the staining.
The kit will not harm the painted siding but make sure to rinse well before the dirt and grime from the cleaning dries on the siding.
We installed a new 6 foot privacy fence (Shadow Box). The posts are 6×6 Pressure Treated Pine and the pickets are Natural Cedar. It was installed in July. I understand the Pine should wait to be stained, but does the Cedar need to dry out as well? Please advise. I was hoping to be able to stain before winter but want to see if it’s best if I waiting until Spring.
Pictures of the fence.
Yes, all new wood needs to season. See this for tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Did i make a mistake ordering dark oak twp 1500 for a pressure treated fence thats a yesr old? I alrdy cleaned it last wkend, i know once you go dark you cant go back thats fine just making sure it wont look stupid since i got $500+ into this stain.
No, it will look great.
We want to use the dark oak 1503 stain on our porch columns – #2 pressure treated 2×4 and 1x6s. It has been a year since the house was built. How close will the result match the color sample? Thank you.
Final color varies based on wood age, type, prep, application, and even your screen monitor. Best to try a sample.
Hi, I pressure washed my log home and am looking to try and keep the logs as light as possible, would the Natural stain be my best choice? Thanks!
Honeytone is the lightest tint that that will offer UV protection from graying.
I stained new pressure treated wood last year with 1501 Cedartone. It’s a little more orange than I like. Can I put Pecan over Cedartone and eventually the orangeness will go away?
You would need to strip the 1501 off if you want to switch to a lighter color like the 1520 Pecan.
I read your directions regarding application of stain to new wood. Would this apply to pressure treated as well? I am asking regarding new pressure treated railing specifically. Could I use the gemini kit to clean, brighten and then stain? Or will I have to let the wood age as directed?
Yes, all wood types. You will have to wait.
Even if Kiln dried?
See below…..
The fast and easy installation of the 8 ft. railing kit makes it the perfect product for the do-it-yourselfer and the professional deck builder. Made of quality pressure treated #1 southern yellow pine and black aluminum balusters, your new stylish railing will be the talk of the neighborhood. The wood components are molded with a decorative high-end finish and are kiln dried after treatment for extra stability and are also ready to stain or paint.
Just trying to avoid doing it twice!
Thanks for your advice in advance!
Yes.
I understand the ‘wet on wet’ application of the 1500 stain. My question is however, is it bad to allow the first coat to dry and then do a second application?
Possibly, yes. If the first coat dries and cures it could hinder the second coat from fully soaking in. This varies though based on how porous the wood is.
Does the Natural 1530 have pigment, or is it just clear?
The Natural is tinted, not clear.
If a deck that has old stain on it is cleaned, but not stripped will the stain still work?
If the stain is over a different brand, it will need to be removed prior to using the TWP.
I will be staining the framing of my newly built pavilion that is made from rough cut hemlock. I will be using 1500 black walnut stain. How many square feet per gallon should I plan for?
About 150-200 sq feet per gallon.
I am in the Seattle area and am redoing my deck which is 10 feet above ground. It is about 20 years old with some boards replaced. It is cedar. In the past, we have used Flood CWF in Redwood and like the look. Sadly, it does not hold up well. I am considering TWP 1500 in Redwood. Deck has been pressure washed and cleaned with Olympic Deck Cleaner. Will the TWP 1500 be the right choice for me? Thank you, Dave.
The Olympic must be removed first. Did your prep remove it? If so, you are good to use the TWP 1500 for this.
OK. Thank you. I have placed my order for the TWP 1500. Will send pic after it’s done.
Don’t forget about our contest and rebate programs for 2018: https://www.twpstain.com/twpstain-com-2018-spring-promos-and-rebates
Will the 1516 rustic match the 116 rustic if I change from the 100 to the 1500 series?
No the colors do not match exactly between series. Clos but not exact.
I’ve bought to much product! First how long will it last? Second will it freeze and not be usable if left out in cold?
See this article: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
Thanks
what is the new stain color that is less orange than cedartone
Pecan 1520
You state that a second coat is applied when the first is still wet. Is it okay to walk on the the first coat? How long after application?
See this for tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
using TWP stain on boat docks ? advice needed…..
What is your question(s)?
Any tips on transferring stain from 5 gal containers to smaller bucket when staining posts, railings, and benches?
Mix the stain well in the 5-gallon pail well first before pouring it into the smaller containers.
I’m currently working on a large backyard renovation that includes 170 feet of (brand new) cedar fence, and a new deck. After doing some research, I have decided that the TWP 1500 series stain is probably my best choice when it comes time to complete my project.
If you have ever seen the Food Network show “The Kitchen”, they have an outdoor set with a wooden fence. I love the color of it, and I’m hoping that I can get a similar result in finishing mine.
Which of the TWP 1500 series colors would you think comes closest to this color? I have looked at all of the sample photos for the various colors, but still would really appreciate your advice.
My fence is made of rough-sawn cedar pickets on pressure treated framing and top-cap. I’m in Pennsylvania.
Thanks!
Rustic 1516 would be closest but it would be a little redder. Another option might be 4 parts 1516 and 1 part 1503 Dark Oak. This will add a little more “brown” to the Rustic color.
See this about the new deck as it cannot be stained right away: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
FYI, We do not allow external links so we had to remove.
Thanks. I was wondering about the feasibility of color-mixing. This was very helpful.
I have 1000 square feet of T&G pine to apply to my porch ceiling that I purchased 15 years ago. I sanded it with 100grit to remove discoloration.
Your natural and honeytone color samples are nearly identical. Is that because of the wood type used for the natural? Do you apply this product wet on wet? Should I apply this product to both sides of the wood to avoid “cupping” if moisture appears inside soffit ?
Hello,
They Honeytone is lighter in color than the Natural. See here for examples: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
Only one coat in your scenario is needed. No on all sides. Just stain the exposed sides.
Which is the best for a mountain deck, 100 series or 1500 series in Utah? The cabin sits at 9000 ft in elevation.
Try the TWP 1500 Series.
