TWP 1500 Series 5 Gallons Deck Stain
Hello,
My deck is hardwood (mahogany). Is your product a stain and sealer from weather all in one product? Which product would be best for a hardwood deck?
Yes, TWP is a stain and a sealer. Use the Rustic color in either the 100 or 1500 Series.
My new smooth cedar fence is installed in Southern California. After letting the fence dry out for one year, it was cleaned, fuzzies buffed-out, brightener applied, and finally, one coat of TWP stain #1530 was applied. (It looks awesome!)
If I understand correctly, your recommendation is that after waiting approximately 12 months, I should clean the fence, and then follow-up with a second coat of TWP stain?
And finally, what is the maintenance schedule following those initial two coats of stain? (ie; how often would I need to clean & re-apply the stain?)
Fences will last twice as long as a deck so do a maintenance coat as needed in 1-2 years and then redo every 3-4 years.
Hi,
what will be the difference in process between maintenance vs. redo for the fence?
Same thing.
so that means do the following every 2 years?
1)
Prep with gemini restore kit and pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
2)
Reapply the 2 coat of TWP stain?
Thanks
Yes.
The contractor that added the skirt to my deck put the boards on the ground. Now the boards are stained with water marks. It has one coat of TWP 1500 Cedartone that is about 2 yrs old. Any ideas on how I can the stains off before I restain with a new coat TWP? Do I need to dry the ends of the boards out with a heat gun? Completely strip and sand?
You will need to strip and brighten but it will not be possible to get the water stains completely out as it is deep throughout the wood.
I have a western red cedar fence in Oregon. I have stripped and brightened it with the RAD products. It has dried for a week in 75 degree weather. I am now ready to stain with the 25 gallons of TWP 1500 that I purchased. However, it is very foggy until 10a in the mornings right now in the fall that puts a lot of moisture/dew in the air and on the surface of the fence. Do I need to wait until later in the day to stain? It would probably have to be 11 or so before it dries completely. It also starts to get dew in the air around 6p, making for a very short work day. I have a week before the rain comes and need to get this done. What do you recommend? Thank you
What to the dew dries off and then stain.
I am in Massachusetts. How long will it take to get a 5 gallon pail of 1504
Black Walnut delivered if ordered today ?
4-5 days.
Do I have to wait until deck railings stop beading water before I can apply a new coat of stain. It will be same cedartone color? Hoping to avoid having to strip the old stain.
Is the stain on the wood TWP and when was it applied?
Yes it is TWP Cedartone 1501. Almost 3 yrs old. Horizontal boards are mostly stain free. Railings still have stain.
Prep with this kit and pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Our redwood siding has been completely sanded, ready for TWP1511. Do I understand from your reply to Brian Bohenick below that since it’s sanded, we should NOT plan on a 2nd coat, neither wet on wet nor a couple days later? Just one coat is best?
Just one coat.
Thanks for rapid response.
Final Picture
I have a pier 980sq ft. built in October 2018. Would like to use 1501 Cedartone. How much stain do I need?
Make sure to prep with this kit if never been stained prior: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-restore-a-deck-kit-detail
About 10 gallons of stain for two coats.
I have power washed the pier to remove the grey. Is the restore kit still needed?
Post a picture.
Pictures after power washing
It looks good to stain.
Thank you. I appreciate the quick responses.
We are using 1503 to stain and preserve a PIER that is L shaped and combined 274 sq feet. Will one 5 gallon bucket allow for coverage? I am confused about 1 or 2 coats. The pier is at least 10 years old and was stained before. Now its just grey and we’ve replaced a few boards. Its otherwise in good shape.
Two coats after prep. About 3-4 gallons.
Hi. Getting ready to apply 1504 – Black Walnut next weekend. How many coats do you recommend? All remaining blue/white/gray paint has been/will removed from surface. I removed 4-5 layers of existing paint and finish sanded the entire surface with 80 grit orbital. Do you recommend wet on wet if one application do I really need to wipe excess if I don’t go heavy? Or if I’m doing two coats over a 24 hour span do I need to wipe excess. Just wondering how to get access to wiping excess if any without markup up or should I just mark it up by walking on it and backbrush out?
Just do the one coat since you sanded the deck.
Ok. So just one coat…wait 15-30 min…second wet coat light so no puddles…and no wipe down?
Only one coat, do not apply a second coat after 15 minutes to sanded wood. No need to wipe unless some stain does not soak in after a few hours or so.
Thank you.
Is the coverage per gallon quoted for TWP 1500 for 1 coat or 2? Does Mahogany typically require 2 coats?
One coat for the coverage and only one coat for Mahogany.
I have a new redwood arbor with brick floor. The redwood is about 3 months old and has been in direct Northern California sunlight. I calculate the total square footage of the structure to be about 2200 square feet. I plan to use 1516 Rustic for staining. How much stain would you estimate to use?
See here about new wood tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Just one coat after the 4+ months and the prep. You will need about 10-15 gallons of the stain and 2-3 kits of the Gemini Restore Prep.
I’m unsure that the Gemini Restore Prep is needed. Is there any way to test the wood or otherwise verify that it is a necessary step?
You always have to prep new wood to remove the mill glaze and any oxidation. No way around it.
what product is recommended for prepping new wood to receive TWP 1500?
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
All is explained for new wood on that link.
how much stain needed for 8 panel gazebo?
We would need a total sq footage of all wood that is being stained.
I previously used TWP 1500 in Cedartone several years ago on my cedar fence. We didn’t like the color as it was too orange. I want to go with the TWP 1500 Dark Oak this time. Do I need to strip the old TWP or just clean and brighten?
Strip and brighten would be best.
A friend stained our deck three years ago with TWP and it was great. We just powerwashed and are planning on staining the deck ourselves this year. Do we use one coat or two? Can we upgrade from 100 series to 1500?
Stick with the same color and series. We would need to see a picture of your prep to determine how many coats are needed.
Calculated square footage for my deck, roughly 1031 sq ft, deck has very worn stain, will be doing strip and brighten first. Is the 1000 sqft coverage per 5 gal based on one or two coats? Was planning on getting 10 gals anyways, should that be enough?
Will also be doing a two tone look – Light stain on top of railing and floor, and dark on verticals.
For 2 coats you would need about 8-10 gallons but that does vary based on wood type and the age of the wood.
Misread. It’s calculated based on 200sq.ft. coverage/gallon.
I will be stripping and refinishing my redwood deck in direct sunlight as there is no shade around my deck. I live in San Diego and the temp where I live reaches 88-100+ degrees In the summertime with about 15% humidity. I will be using TWP 1515 honeytone stain. So, in high temps, How can I determine if the wood is ready for the 2nd coat without waiting too long?
If doing a second coat it needs to be applied wet on wet or 20-60 minutes after the first coat. Typically decks that are older and very dried out will require the wet on wet application.
Hi Frank. I also live in San Diego and stained last month. 30 mins gave the first coat enough time to soak in, but w/o drying. It dries slowly, so I probably could’ve waited longer. I also allowed the second coat to soak for 30 mins before wiping off excess. It is easy to recoat annually or whenever you think you need it. Wiping off all excess before it gets too tacky is critical.
Can I get by with one coat of stain for a fence? Also how many gallons? Will be using a airless spray painter on 165 ft long, 6ft tall privacy fence on both sides
One coat may not cover correctly as wood fences are very absorbent. For 2000 sq feet, you would need about 20 gallons for two coats.
That comes to 100sq.ft. coverage per gallon, much lower than what’s specified. Is this typical for fence due to high absorbance?
100 Sq feet per gallon for 2 coats is correct. The spec is one coat.
Do I need (3) Gemini Kits for my patio, deck, landing and stairs
That would depend on how big your project is?
What is the shelf life for the stain? Can a open gallon/5gallon be usable the next year or so? Best recommendation
See this: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
I used Red Wood, love the product not super thrilled about the color and that is my fault. I can live with it, the question is: If i want to “change colors” without stripping and starting all over.. How long can one expect to wait for the new stain to fade and to switch to another TWP color? What are my best options to achieve my goal of altering to color more towards a natural/ brown stain. Thanks in advance
You will have to strip to switch colors. You can do that now or latter.
How do I get rid of the tacky spots that are present after a week of dry time?
See for tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-is-spotty-or-shiny/
I Have recently cleaned and scrubbed all the Mildew off our Deck. Upper and lower . The wood Needs sealing ! what would you recommend 1 or 2 coats. It has been 4yrs. since last did with TWP1511 California Redwood. I appreciate your product. (The outside panels are Still in Great shape.)
Two coats wet on wet application.
Is it safe to touch up the sides of the deck boards after the top is dry?
You would have to be very careful to not leave spot stains on top of the boards.
I stripped and sealed my deck with the TWP 1500 7 years ago, do you recommend re-stripping and sealing or just paint/seal over it? Thanks!
Clean and brighten with this: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Then apply another coat of twp 1500 after cleaning and brightening?
thanks
Correct.
I just stained my deck but I feel another coat would be best on the floor. I ordered another gallon. Can I simply apply it over the last cost if its been a week since my application?
You do not need more and adding too much at this point could result in it not curing correctly and being sticky and tacky.
Ok. Thank you!
How does one get rid of the tackiness?
Let it cure/dry for a few days or longer.
So this should clear up on it’s own?
Yes, it will dry.
Hi Paul, Can you tell us what color stain your have in this picture? It looks great. Thank you!
I used some of your stain a couple of years ago on my fence and want to order more. I’m not sure what color I used and want to use the same color again. Is it possible you have some sort of record of my purchase? Dave Rouch, 3410 Morris Ave., Pueblo, CO 81008. Thanks, Dave
Honeytone 1515. 3 gallons.
Ignore the three middle samples, they’re from a big box stores. The left is Dark Oak and the right is Rustic, both applied yesterday. Are these accurate? They both look a little different than pictures
Yes they are correct.
Great! How do I use the credit from the samples on the 5 gal bucket?
https://www.twpstain.com/woodsamples-detail
Just for your info I stripped the deck and then sanded and used the brightener. So next year I can just use the cleaner and brightener then stain? I used the TWP natural it looks really nice!
Yes, clean and brighten for prep.
I just used TWP transparent 1500 next year can I by just cleaning the deck and use again?
Yes, clean and then stain.
Color will always vary based on wood type and age of the wood. It is correct in the picture.
Hi – I’m about to retreat my deck, that was previously treated with TWP a few years ago.On your “Stain Info ” you state 1-2 coats – Is this recommended ? Also you state “wet on wet ” how much time can elapse before the 2nd coat ? Thanks
The second coat goes on 20-60 minutes after the first coat.
Hopefully the last questions! I want the deck close to a natural western red cedar “look”. But 90% of the deck is nearly 20 years old and the rest “replacement” boards I installed last summer. I think the last time I refinished the deck I used “Cedartone” and it was darker than I wanted. How would the “Honeytone” or “Natural” do based on the different age of my deck boards? Would they blend the two different looking boards well enough? Also, you’ve suggested 7-8 gallons for a double wet on wet application on my 800 sq ft deck. If I buy 2-5 gallon buckets, what’s the “shelf life” of the leftover stain, will it be good in a year or two for a light touch up? Really appreciate your feedback! Thanks, David
Hello,
No, you cannot blend new and old boards with any TWP color. The newer boards will be lighter in color no matter what. See here: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
I’ve used the two step Restore-A-Deck to prep my old western red cedar deck. First question, which finish should I use: TWP 1500 or Armstrong Clark? Do both use the double wet on wet application method? And how much stain will I need to do a two coat wet on wet for 800 sq. feet of deck?
Use the TWP 1500. Two coats wet on wet. About 7-8 gallons.
Is there a difference between the durability for product shipped to Illinois vs Michigan?
No.
I am looking for a color in the 1500 series to coordinate with a “mocha” stained cedar gazebo from Costco. It needs to have little yellow/ orange tones. It is on a deck that has an orange ish stail now that will be stripped. What color would you suggest. Pic attached
TWP does not have a color like that. Closest would be Honeytone but it will be much richer.
Sorry, I forgot to also ask. Which applicator is better, more efficient, give better results: a pad or a deck brush?
We like stain pads best.
How many coats on an older western red cedar deck?
2 coats wet on wet: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
I would like to use as close to clear as possible but want UV protection. I’m doing a redwood fence and lattice and want to preserve the look it has without too much tint. Which of the tints is the closest to clear, Natural, Cedartone or Honeytone?
I need to know the same thing. I want clear so the word stays natural color. What is the negative on clear not having UV protection?
That is not possible. Clear will not retain the color and will gray in months. It must be tinted for protection from graying.
I’m going with Honeytone as that looks the closest to clear as in my original question.
I am wanting to stain the exterior of a barn that has yellow pine board and batten. Southern Wood Specialties uses your stains and suggested I contact you. I am wanting to stain my barn a weathered grey color where I can still see some of the wood grain (looks as though it naturally weathered). What stain do you suggest. I have a couple of weeks to get it done so I would like to get it ordered as soon as possible.
Look at Cape Cod gray in the 100 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series
or Slate Gray in the 200 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
I like both. Can you tell me which one would still show some grain? Can either of these be put on with a pump up sprayer or do I need an air sprayer?
Both show the grain the same. You can pump spray but you will have to back brush to ensure it applies evenly.
What is the best way to ensure that the stain is mixed thoroughly before an application? I used a 5 Gallon container last time and didn’t realize that the stain had settled some before I poured out a second serving maybe an hour later. Did I mix it properly?
Use a 5-gallon drill mixer on your drill. You can get them at any hardware store for about $5.
I cleaned/brightened and used one coat TWP 1500 series pecan stain on my new cedar deck last September 2019. Will I need to stain another coat again this year or what is the maintenance process?
Only apply another coat if it is needed. It would be the exact same process as before.
I had twp redwood applied to my new 6′ wood fence 3 years ago, i want to reapply another treatment. i plan to pressure wash both sides again. is there any need to do any other prep work other than a 2500psi pressure wash?
Yes, use this kit while pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
I have a new deck. How would you recommend I prep the wood for this stain?
See here: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
I have a cedar log home I stain it many years ago with Glidden endurance oil stain in rustic color, I pressure washed whole house, will the 1500 series go on over the old stain, Thanks
Sorry but no, you will need to stip off the Glidden when switching to TWP (or any other brand) of wood stain. Use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Hello,
I stained my cedar fence in cedartone a couple of years ago, and it turned out to be more “reddish” than I had hoped. We are getting ready to restain, and don’t know what color to choose. I was thinking the Pecan? Would that cover the existing cedartone/ be less “red” in appearance?
Thanks!
When switching colors you should use the Stripper and Brightener Kit for prep. As for color, best to get some samples and test on your wood.
https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Hi, if I have fence of area of 2160 SQ FT, how much stain product would I need?
The community where I am living have a code where I could not color the cedar fence. Which stain should I choose then so it did not have color? Should it be Natural or Cedartone? I noticed Natural seemed to suggest no UV protection?
Also if the fence is new (for the new home that close in last Dec), would I need to clean it with the deck product? Would I need to wait and weather it? Or would I be able to start staining right the way in summer time?
Thank you
About 15 gallons for the one coat on new wood. Natural and Cedarteone are tinted colors. Only the Clear has no color or tint. Clear will not provide UV protection. It must be tinted or colored for UV protection. The lightest tinted color with UV protection is the Honeytone. See here about new wood and wait and prep.
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Do I have to apply a sealant after the TWP stain? I can’t seemed to find sealant product online. Thanks again
You cannot apply a sealant over a deck stain nor would there be any need to.
For the state of California and the fence application, should I use TWP 200 or 1500 series? I noticed there’s more color option in TWP 200? Which color of that is lightest besides clear?
thanks again
Use the TWP 1500 for a fence on CA. The Honeytone is the lightest tinted color. Clear will not provide UV protection from graying.
the second pic is with some cheap home depot stain over the filler and over and under the twp semi transparent.
help!!! what can i do
Sorry but there is not much you can do. Wood filler does not work on outside decking and never stains to blend with a semi transparent deck stain like TWP.
could i use something to mix with the twp to produce some color?
Sorry but no.
The majority of your Fence looks lovely. I would simply buy some acrylic paint in brown ad beige to mix a custom color to cover and blend in the patches of wood filler shining through
