If it is a rough-sawn cut, you can stain it now.
Will chlorine effect the stain?Used 1500 series (natural) on my other deck and want to use the same on my pool deck.
If splashed on a deck, chlorine will degrade or lighten it. No exterior stain is immune to chlorine/bleach.

Hi, How do I know if I need 1 or 2 coats on a deck surface? The deck is old, but in decent shape and homeowner told me it was stained with TWP about 3 ago. Help! I had a brand new deck stained by a professional yesterday who used a sprayer then wiped by hand with a towel. I asked him to apply with a brush instead; he didn’t. The product used was TWP-1501-5 on pressure treated pine. 20 hrs has past and it still looks wet and very blotchy. Can someone tell me if this the norm or was it applied incorrectly? I want to gather as much information as possible before I complain and request correction. From what I’ve read so far it has been applied too heavily??? How should it be corrected? Thanks in advance! Hello. I live in the northeast and have a large pressure treated deck (~1700 sq ft) that has previously been stained with a semi-solid product. Half the deck is mostly in the sun and the other half mostly in the shade. The old stain has chipped off over the years; it was most previously stained about 13 years ago. I have pressure washed the deck, replaced some old boards and will sand the deck in the coming weeks. I have some rough areas where splintering has begun to show and thus want to sand. I am looking for deep penetrating oil type products that wont’s peel and that I can reapply every few years with limited prep work. Is TWP 1700 a product that could work for me?
Yes, the TWP 1500 is the correct product. Make sure to thoroughly remove the old stain, and, after sanding, clean and brighten for final prep.

I have a cabin with log siding in northern WI that had been neglected for some time. I have attached a picture for reference. If I have the process correct, I would need to apply the stripper, then brightener, then re-stain (thinking the 1500 series)? Is there no need for any sort of top coat for moisture?
What stain was used prior as it looks film forming, almost like a varnish. You cannot strip varnish with a deck stain stripper. You may need to media blast to remove fully before using the 1500 Series.
FYI, you cannot top coat over the TWP stains. No need.
I finished up with RAD stripper and brightener and down to bare wood, how long do I have before I apply 1500? Forecast looks rainy this week…

Ok. Can I use some generic oxalic acid or is the RAD brightener different? I can grab some oxalic acid at the local hardware stor quickly if needed. I appreciate the help.
Use the RAD Brightener. Straight oxalic is too aggressive.
How best to remove excess stain that has been “dry” for a week. There is a tackiness that wont come off with a cloth. I read that you can reapply the stain to loosen it up they wipe off or to use mineral salts. Please advise thank you!

I’m looking to have my 25 year old deck redone with the 1500 semi-transparent redwood stain, it was stained with Benjamin Moore arbor coat semi-solid stain 2 years ago and is peeling badly. Would sanding followed by the brightener be recommended over the stripper/brightener?

How do you cleanup 1500 series drips and overspray from a pond’s rubber liner? Can you use baking soda? The SDS says no strong alkali, but baking soda is pH 8-8.5 so not strong, correct? NOTE: I also saw ammonia suggested for glass, but one would NOT want to use ammonia in a pond.
Sorry but we have no idea what would work on your rubber liner and not harm it.
I see that the temperature needs to be above 50° during application. How long after application does it need to be above that temperature? Also, how long does it need to be dry after application? In other words, if it rains and gets wet will that affect the efficacy?
It cannot drop below 40 for at least 24 hours and it can take a day or two to fully dry in colder temps.

I have a pressure treated Pergola that has been weathered, cleaned, brightened and is ready for stain. I live in North Carolina and it gets sun all day long. Which product will last the longest in the heavy sun. I would rather not have to clean, brighten and stain every year or two if possible.

Hey Pete, whatever you do, don’t cut corners on the brightener. The cleaner the wood gets the better it will absorb. The good thing about guys at TWP is they will inform, but aren’t desperate to sell you just anything. My deck has intermittent daily sun depending on the season but I’ve got great shade. If I were you I’d get their recommendation and also ask if a third coat might help delay another application next year.

We have a sinker cypress porch floor that was installed in 2014. We have used TWP 1500 series since installation and love the color and UV protection. Our problems are scratches from our pups and indentations from high heels. Can a clear marine varnish be applied over the TWM 1500 series stain?
No. TWP cannot be top-coated. It will peel if you apply a marine varnish.
We have a Missouri red cedar deck and have used cedar tone on it in the past but it doesn’t give it the red color. It is orange/brown. I was going to use clear but understand it would have no UV protection. Would the natural color work and keep it more like the wood and give protection. I’m getting ready to strip the old color and brighten it with restore a deck products. Waiting on a little cooler weather and it’s coming. It’s a big project. I was going to let it gray but hubby wants nothing to do with that. We’ve always used TWP but not pleased the past time with colo.

I have a fence that requires staining. Side 1 was built 5 years ago, currently has old PPG stain on it (we do not like the color). Side 2 was built 3 years ago and has never been stained. Side 3 and Side 4 were built one month ago, no not stained. As I try to follow your prep and stain practices, I am trying to figure out the correct timeline for staining my entire fence at one time. Do I need to wait so the new wood is aged and start with the Gemini and follow with TWP 1500?

Personally, I’m partial to the 1530 natural. However given the intensity of the Arizona son, these guys might have better suggestions for preserving wood health and fade avoidance.

I have a house with cedar siding that I guess had some sort of polyurethane protecting it. It badly needed some care, especially on the south side, having turned dark gray there.
I had someone corn blast off the previous finish and the next step will be to sand off the bits that the corn blasting didn’t get and smooth out the surface. The wood is looking much brighter now, much closer to new.
I want to stain with TWP 1500 natural, and I’m wondering what to do for the next step.

You do not want the wood surface smooth. You want it porous. Do not sand finer than 60 grit.

Hi. My redwood deck is 2.5 years old, and was stain with TWP1511 in spring 2021. After two years area that is exposed to the elements have lost its water protection capability while area under arbor still look good.

It seems I’ve read that RAD brightener is effective in cleaning cement stain. Can I assume step 1 cleaner is okay, or she I just use brightener? How toxic is it to leafy plants?

I have stained my deck with TWP 1500 for years, really love the stuff. Is it necessary to always strip and brighten? Can a good scrub and a power sprayer work just as well? My last application was 3 years ago.

Pressure washing alone does not do as good of a job.
TWP, I agree and have seen the difference in pressure washing alone compared to the RAD kit. The difference in the cleanness and brightness of the two is crazy. The challenge I’m having is that this week I took a couple of days to prep for stain and got the deck to look light, bright as if it couldn’t be more ready for stain.
Since the prep I’ve waited 48 hours to stain but …. It has not rained but I live on the west coast and every morning I wake to a deck that’s covered with the overnight marine layer. I have no idea when I’ll find a reasonable time, not to mention optimal, to stain.
TWP, can you guys please advise?

Please excuse just a couple more questions. Before applying RAD brightener which wood condition is preferable wet, damp or dry? Also, when applying the 1500 natural stain is it acceptable to spray stain on from the bottle used to apply the brightener if rinsed or is it best to dip a pad in a stain tray?

Damp wood for brightener. You can use a pump sprayer with the stain but you should back wipe to ensure an even application.

I have 5 gallons of 1530 natural stain remaining from work about three to four year ago. I’ve cleaned and will put RAD brightener on this morning. I have 700′ of 6 year old redwood and 200′ of, at least 20 y.o. fir that was there when we bought the house. Two questions: 1) I’m selling the house and would prefer to not buy more stain but don’t want to shaft a new buyer. What are the ramifications of only putting on one coat of stain now; and 2) I’d like to stain soon after putting the brightener on but for some reason I’m thinking that the 1530 could not be applied wet on wet. Am I right about that?

After finishing the staining process (Dark Oak), how long before it dries to the point it won’t transfer to things put onto it (I’m thinking Rugs, Big Pillows, Dog Paws, etc)? Should I powerwash (or just spray it down) before I do that to wash off any residual stain?
TWP is a fully curing stain so it does not rub off. Full cure can take a few days depending on weather conditions.

This may be a dumb question..I am looking to seal the skirt of my deck as the boards and railings are trex. Do I need to do both front and back of boards? The skirt encloses the bottom of the deck so you can’t see inside.

Is that for one coat or 2. Also, is the 2 coats stated for both all horizontal and vertical, or just the horizontal surfaces. I am referencing the semi-transparent stain. Thank you.

We have a large deck that is also goes half way around an above ground pool. We’ve used Defy in the past but it doesn’t seem to hold up as the entire deck is in full sun..what is recommended to re-stain with? I’m searching for a product that will hold up longer than 1 year. I used semi transparent, but am thinking more solid of color? Any suggestions would be appreciated! We live in Wisconsin so winter weather is also a consideration

We have tried many products on our cedar fence and deck. TWP stains are by far the best product without doubt. Wood will require maintenance but TWP outperforms the competition. We won’t use anything else ever.
What moisture level is required for white cedar fence? My meter reads 15 and it was installed a week ago. When the moisture is right can I just dust off the fence and start staining? Thanks!

2021 I used the restore-a-deck stripper and brightener prior to applying the twp1530 stain. (See pictures) I was very happy with results by the results of both the prep and the stain. I may have had to high of expectation though when it came to longevity. I was expecting that the deck would last at least 2 years before having to redo the deck. I live in California. The reason for my contact here is to try to understand if the expectations were out of line or maybe the application last year was faulty. I understand it’s difficult given you didn’t see the work last year or how the deck appears today. But would appreciate any comments.
It looks “dirty” which could be from trees or just the surrounding area. The stain is intact and still working.
