VOC States

by Administrator

VOC (Volatile organic compounds) regulations are changing rapidly across the USA and Canada. Not all of the stains that we sell are compliant for all areas. As it stands 16 US states and Canada have adopted the more stringent 250 regulation:

TWP 100 Series and TWP Semi-Solid Pro-Series is not VOC Compliant for Canada and these USA states and cannot be shipped or used there: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont*, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Northern VA, Pennsylvania, Parts of Arizona, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, all of Canada.

TWP 1500 Series is compliant for all 50 States but cannot be shipped or used in Canada.

TWP 200 Series is compliant for all 50 States and Canada.

*Although Vermont is a member of the Ozone Transport Commission (OTC), they have yet to enact those VOC regulations. Vermont currently observes VOC regulations established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

I stained my deck a few years ago with TWP 100, and it’s time to re-stain this spring. Do I need to strip/sand the previous TWP 100 prior to re-staining with a new batch of TWP 100?

We are in Colorado. House and decks stained with Pecan/TWP 100. High sun areas do not bead water – does that indicate it is time to restrain? It has been 4 years. Which product do you recommend since 100 is not an option?

Use the TWP 1500. Decks typically need to be redone every 2-3 years. House will last 4-7. Proabbly time to redo the deck.

My question is can I stain Ceder wood with TWP 1502 Redwood stain tone ? Or should just keep it Cedertone?

I am new to staining and have been doing lot of research and found TWP could be the best to restore the used Ceder swing set I just bought.

Appreciate any responses

Have always used TWP products on our double decker Brazilian hardwood deck with great results. Our go to guy left the area so two years ago I did it myself using Gemini cleaner/brightener and Honeytone stain. Looked great. This year, my husband and I cleaned the deck but after that cleaning/brightening we had rain almost every two days for two weeks. So we couldn’t stain under those rainy conditions. Last week we re-used the Gemini since we didn’t want to stain a deck that was not totally clean. Now we are stuck with the same problem. We can’t get 4 days without rain (two days before and two days after staining). Is there a solution? I keep looking at the forecast and don’t see 4 days of sun in the next week. That means we will have to clean again?!!!! Can we let it go and try again in the spring? We are in Maryland coastal area.

You do not need two days after. 12-24 hours would work. You can leave it as is if needed and then prep and stain in Spring.

I’m getting ready to restain my home which is sided with T-111. All prior coatings have been with Olympic Semi-Transparent stain. Will 1500 work ok for this application and can you tell me what impact using 1500 rather than 100 (since I’m in Pennsylvania) has on protection? Thank you.

You cannot apply the TWP over the Olympic. You will need to remove that completely first. Once removed, the TWP 1500 would be the correct choice.

Thanks for the quick response. I want to make sure I understand though. We had TWP 200 series applied on several different occasions over the years, but I don’t think there was any stripping done. I can’t remember if we changed the color (in the same series) over the years. So, within the TWP family, I think you are saying I need to have the deck stripped when moving from 200 to 100 series. Please confirm. I would also like to know the protocol for applying the same series on top of the previous coat after thorough cleaning. TIA!

My redwood deck is around 30 years old in Whitefish, Montana. Several years ago I made the mistake of applying a “stain” that was more like a paint (2 different colors for different levels). Now, using a 4″ putty knife I am trying to scrape off the paint so I can apply a penetrating oil. I will most likely need to sand some, for which I read an orbital sander with 36 grit paper recommended. After that, should I use RAD cleaner/brightener before using TWP Pro Series penetrating oil? Some of the ends of the deck are rotted, and I may have some redwood to replace it. How would you re-do this deck?? The stairs up was added more recently, and has never had a finish…would you recommend using the light gray stain on the whole deck?

Which formulation is our best option (the difference between 1500 and 200 isn’t clear to me) and if it’s the 1500, would you please recommend a color or two or three that are closest to the Butternut of the 200 series? Love your product. Have now stained my cedar deck 3 times every 2-3 years using the TWP 100 series Dark Oak color, using cleaner/brightener each time. The deck is gradually becoming quite dark in color. Can I use Clear next time, or perhaps mix Clear with Dark Oak to lessen the color? Clear info states “no UV protection” — is that important? Maybe switch to Pecan or a lighter color? Your advice?
