VOC (Volatile organic compounds) regulations are changing rapidly across the USA and Canada. Not all of the stains that we sell are compliant for all areas. As it stands 16 US states and Canada have adopted the more stringent 250 regulation:
TWP 100 Series and TWP Semi-Solid Pro-Series is not VOC Compliant for Canada and these USA states and cannot be shipped or used there: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont*, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Northern VA, Pennsylvania, Parts of Arizona, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, all of Canada.
TWP 1500 Series is compliant for all 50 States but cannot be shipped or used in Canada.
TWP 200 Series is compliant for all 50 States and Canada.
*Although Vermont is a member of the Ozone Transport Commission (OTC), they have yet to enact those VOC regulations. Vermont currently observes VOC regulations established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
What oil base deck stain do you have that is black or close to it? Thank you.
TWP 1504 Black Walnut.
I stained my deck a few years ago with TWP 100, and it’s time to re-stain this spring. Do I need to strip/sand the previous TWP 100 prior to re-staining with a new batch of TWP 100?
Use this kit for prep while pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Can I order TWP series 100 in OHIO 44685?
No, you would need the TWP 1500 for Ohio.
What is your suggestion for staining/sealing 10 year old treated wood (pine?) on a dock over salt water in South Carolina. Plan to lightly pressure wash first.
For proper prep help, we would need to see pics of the current condition. After prep, use the TWP 100 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series
We are in Colorado. House and decks stained with Pecan/TWP 100. High sun areas do not bead water – does that indicate it is time to restrain? It has been 4 years. Which product do you recommend since 100 is not an option?
Use the TWP 1500. Decks typically need to be redone every 2-3 years. House will last 4-7. Proabbly time to redo the deck.
I am new to staining and have been doing lot of research and found TWP could be the best to restore the used Ceder swing set I just bought.
You can use any color that you like.
What should i use for bay area california for a new redwood based fence
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use the TWP 1500 after wait and prep.
Don’t know about California, but is a top notch product on treated wood in the Tennessee foothills of the Smokey Mountains. Wouldn’t use anything else.
What is best treatment for rough cut cypress in Columbia SC for a pergola project? A lot of sun and humidity. This is regular rough cut cypress, not old growth or so called sinker. Intend to darken slightly with a cedar color.
Use the TWP 100 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series
Have always used TWP products on our double decker Brazilian hardwood deck with great results. Our go to guy left the area so two years ago I did it myself using Gemini cleaner/brightener and Honeytone stain. Looked great. This year, my husband and I cleaned the deck but after that cleaning/brightening we had rain almost every two days for two weeks. So we couldn’t stain under those rainy conditions. Last week we re-used the Gemini since we didn’t want to stain a deck that was not totally clean. Now we are stuck with the same problem. We can’t get 4 days without rain (two days before and two days after staining). Is there a solution? I keep looking at the forecast and don’t see 4 days of sun in the next week. That means we will have to clean again?!!!! Can we let it go and try again in the spring? We are in Maryland coastal area.
You do not need two days after. 12-24 hours would work. You can leave it as is if needed and then prep and stain in Spring.
OK Thanks.
Can 100 ship to Chesapeake, VA 22324?
Yes.
I’m getting ready to restain my home which is sided with T-111. All prior coatings have been with Olympic Semi-Transparent stain. Will 1500 work ok for this application and can you tell me what impact using 1500 rather than 100 (since I’m in Pennsylvania) has on protection? Thank you.
You cannot apply the TWP over the Olympic. You will need to remove that completely first. Once removed, the TWP 1500 would be the correct choice.
I have beams and posts on for a veranda in Nevada exposed to the sun previously coded with linseed oil mixed with a vera thane and so there is a topcoat on it do I need to sand before applying this product which product would you recommend 1500 or 100 and should I use the cleaner and a pressure washer as well
Sand it off first and then use the Gemini Restore Kit after. Use the TWP 1500 Series.
I have a cedar home in the midwest, (MO) that gets lots of sun. Mi installer is saying 200 series as opposed to 100 series, but im seeking guidance as to the best for this job..?
Either would work very well for this.
Can you ship TWP100 to Lake County Illinois (Highland Park, zip code 60035)?
No, only the TWP 1500 for IL: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
I live in Nebraska. Have one year old cedar floor boards and new pine spindles. What would be a good stain to use to help match those woods. I know it won’t be perfect, but looking to see if you have suggestions on something close.
Prep with the Gemini Restore Kit and stain with any color that you like in the 100 Series.
We have high dog traffic across the deck, do you recommend oil or water based stain? Also, if I buy more than I need, how long will the extra unopened stain last?
Oil-based. See here about shelf life: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
Thank you!
Can twp 100 series be applied over previously installed 1500 series?
No, you would need to strip and brighten for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
I have a 5 year old deck that has been sealed with a transparent stain twice so far. Used a different brand. Did not last and looks awful. We are having the 14 x 27 deck stripped and re stained. I did not know whether to get the 1500 or 100.
Where are you located?
Raleigh North Carolina
TWP 100 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series
Thank you.
The last time I used your product on my log cabin, I mixed 50% cedar and 50% clear now I am using the 1500 will I get the same result.
Similar but the 1501 Cedartone is slightly darker than the 101 Cedartone if that is what you sued last time.
Can I use the TWP 1500 (clear) on a rough cedar fence ?
Yes.
Used your TWP 100 in honey 3 yeas ago on some exposed beams in Central Oregon and thought it would be time to repeat. While washing the beams to prep them, I noticed the TWP is STILL beading water like the day after I applied it AWESOME!!!
I now have my mother convinced to use it on her deck. She previously used a different brand of oil based stain. Question: Will she need to strip the deck or can she apply the TWP 100 over the old oil based product?
You will need to remove the previous coating fully first.
My deck is currently stained in TWP 201. The last time it was done (2015), the company didn’t do a great job. I’m about to restain and I think the TWP 101 is a better fit based on what I see on this site. I am in GA.
Can the TWP 101 be applied on top of the TWP 201 after just a cleaning?
No. Strip and brighten for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Thanks for the quick response. I want to make sure I understand though. We had TWP 200 series applied on several different occasions over the years, but I don’t think there was any stripping done. I can’t remember if we changed the color (in the same series) over the years. So, within the TWP family, I think you are saying I need to have the deck stripped when moving from 200 to 100 series. Please confirm. I would also like to know the protocol for applying the same series on top of the previous coat after thorough cleaning. TIA!
Yes, you have to strip to change. When recoating with the same series, use this for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Per your VOC listing, TWP 100 cannot be shipped to “Northern Virginia”. I’m in Southwestern Virginia (Huddleston, VA 24104). Can TWP 100 be shipped to Huddleston? If not, where in Virginia can it be shipped?
It is fine there. Just not allowed in the DC area counties of VA.
I have a 20-year old dock in NC which gets full sun. I applied a penetrating oil about 4 years ago and it has held up well, but wanted to change color. Not sure I can remove it. Other than pressure washing is there any prep work I need to do and which stain would you recommend?
i have a deck and dock in Missouri on a lake. some shaded areas and some with a lot of sun. 100 or 1500?
100 Series.
I have a newly built cabin what can I use that is good quality that allows woodgrain to show
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use the 100 Series.
How long does it take for delivery?
That depends on where you live?
Live in Minnesota and applied a water based semi-transparent stain to a new cedar deck. Did not hold up. What should i use?
You will need to remove that first. How depends on the stan brand and type. Pictures would help as well. Once that is done, use the TWP 100 Series.
Cabot semi-transparent oil based
You will have to sand that off as what is on your wood is opaque in transparency, not semi-transparent.
drum sand it off
My redwood deck is around 30 years old in Whitefish, Montana. Several years ago I made the mistake of applying a “stain” that was more like a paint (2 different colors for different levels). Now, using a 4″ putty knife I am trying to scrape off the paint so I can apply a penetrating oil. I will most likely need to sand some, for which I read an orbital sander with 36 grit paper recommended. After that, should I use RAD cleaner/brightener before using TWP Pro Series penetrating oil? Some of the ends of the deck are rotted, and I may have some redwood to replace it. How would you re-do this deck?? The stairs up was added more recently, and has never had a finish…would you recommend using the light gray stain on the whole deck?
You will have to sand this to remove it. Clean/Brighten after. TWP 100 Series. Any color that you like.
If it’s all sanded down, why does it need clean/brighten? Does it need to be pressure washed?
It opens up the wood pores after sanding. Pressure wash while using the prep products.
How long will the 5 gallon cans last before they expire??

I would like to re-stain my cedar deck (after two years) again with TWP100.
your website will not allow me to order a one-gallon container.
Living in Washington state, there is no VOC restriction.
Please let me know how to place an order.

We have a new pressure-treated wood screened in porch and need to stain the inside floor and the outside support beams and lattice. We live in NC but would prefer lower VOC and a “healthier” option. Which formulation is our best option (the difference between 1500 and 200 isn’t clear to me) and if it’s the 1500, would you please recommend a color or two or three that are closest to the Butternut of the 200 series? Thank you very much!
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use the 100 after wait and prep. Pecan or Dark Oak.
Can I purchase this somewhere in Georgia
I just posted a question on what to use on my over 32 year old deck. Just in case you suggest TWP 100 I checked the states it can be used in and I cannot use it in CT. Here is my deck. Hoping you can help me know what to use. Thanks again!
TWP 1500 Series for CT.
I have 10 year old cypress board and batten siding that needs to be restained. What do you recommend?
How to prep depends on the current condition. Send pictures.
After it is prepped, use the TWP 1500.
Pics to my cypress board and batten. I have cleaned with Olympic deck and siding cleaner
Strip and brighten the wood for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Before using the TWP stain.
Should I add a prestain conditioner if applying to pressure treated pine to ensure a uniform finish?
No, you cannot use a conditioner with a deck stain like TWP.
I am looking to restain my cabin in Roanoke, VA. Should I use 100 or 1500? Do I need to do 2 coats or can I get away with 1?
Use the TWP 1500. Two coats wet on wet.
I have an old gallon of TWP 1516 Rustic Oak Max Voc Formula. I can’t find anywhere that sells it near me (South San Francisco) and don’t see the max voc formula on your site. Where can I get this and is it still legal in California?
You can get the Rustic on this link: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-1500-series
Same product.
What is the VOC that is in the 100 series?
550
I don’t really understand the difference between the 100 and 1500 series. What should I use in Richmond, VA? My deck is 20 years old and I last used TWP about 5 years ago on it but I don’t remember what I used.
Use the 1500. The difference is VOC laws and what is or isn’t allowed.
Do any local retailers carry your product in Minneapolis, MN?
We sell online from our site. Takes about 2-4 business days to MN to arrive.
Is Loudoun County Va considered Northern Va?
Yes.
I’m looking to protect criss cross/wooden cattle fencing that was put up about a year ago. It has no stain on it now. I live in Oneida, Tn. (which is in the Cumberland Plateau area). What would you recommend I use? Any base coat? Stain/Protector? and how many coats? Look forward to hearing back from you….Thank you..
Use the TWP 1500 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
2 Coats applied wet on wet. No base coat is needed.
I have a 12’ x 12 ‘ 28 yr old red cedar deck. I am replacing 9 boards. I live in DC. The TWP 100 Series is outlawed here. Should I use the 1500 in Pecan? Years ago I used one of the stains. It’s a red cedar color. Don’t know what it was. I have 13 spiral steps.
Jane Sanders
Yes, you would want the TWP 1500 Series for this. You will need to remove the current stain first.
I am planning to stain a newly installed fence (deck wood). How long do you recommend before staining? I will also be doing our large deck. It has a well worn stain if some sort already, from the previous homeowners. What prep is needed for the deck? Finally, do you recommend the 100 or 1500 for northern Virginia? Thanks!
You have to use the TWP 1500 for Northern VA. See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
We would need some pictures to help determine the prep needed for the deck.
Love your product. Have now stained my cedar deck 3 times every 2-3 years using the TWP 100 series Dark Oak color, using cleaner/brightener each time. The deck is gradually becoming quite dark in color. Can I use Clear next time, or perhaps mix Clear with Dark Oak to lessen the color? Clear info states “no UV protection” — is that important? Maybe switch to Pecan or a lighter color? Your advice?
No, you cannot use the Clear over the Dark Oak. What you could do is trip it down. it is just as easy or easier than using the cleaner: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Have dry hemp fir or doug fir hand hewn beams and support carved posts coming to Sa Juan County, UT in a month or so. Should I put up and let sit till spring? Will they turn gray? I do not want gray as the natural wood color is important to us. Should I get the 100 series or the 1500 series? Will the clear allow the wood to turn gray or should I get the lightest stain color? Thanks so much.
Yes, install and wait until Spring to prep and stain. The prep will remove any gray. Use the 1500 Series. Clear will gray naturally.
Are any other colors available in TWP 1500; such as the TWP 100 colors? Are special colors possible?
Sorry but no other color options and no special colors can be made.
Hi, I stained my new deck last fall with TWP 100 with wet on wet. I was unable to treat again this spring, but I’m ready to do it now. I will use cleaner/brightener first, bust as far as staining goes, do you recommend 2 coats wet on wet again or should I use just one coat? I feel like I should do wet on wet again.
If you have a base coat after prep, then just do one coat.
I’m reading your site – it’s very helpful – but I’m not sure I understand the difference between the 100 series and the 1500 series. I live in western NC. Does that make a difference?
Use the 100 for NC.
Is TWP 100 allowed to ship and use in Flagstaff, Arizona? Zip code 86004
Should be. The Phoenix area is restricted to low VOCs.
