VOC (Volatile organic compounds) regulations are changing rapidly across the USA and Canada. Not all of the stains that we sell are compliant for all areas. As it stands 16 US states and Canada have adopted the more stringent 250 regulation:
TWP 100 Series and TWP Semi-Solid Pro-Series is not VOC Compliant for Canada and these USA states and cannot be shipped or used there: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont*, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Northern VA, Pennsylvania, Parts of Arizona, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, all of Canada.
TWP 1500 Series is compliant for all 50 States but cannot be shipped or used in Canada.
TWP 200 Series is compliant for all 50 States and Canada.
*Although Vermont is a member of the Ozone Transport Commission (OTC), they have yet to enact those VOC regulations. Vermont currently observes VOC regulations established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
If we can’t get the semi solid pro Series, what is the next best recommended twp product for UV protection.
The TWP 100 or 1500 Series.
I live in central Indiana zip 46112, can I use the 100 series?
No, you need the 1500 Series for IN: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
Our zip is 24501 (South Central Virginia). Where is the southern line for the Northern Virginia VOC limit?
It is the counties of the DC area that are restricted.
What series is TWF Shake and Vertical Surface Sealant and what happens if you use it on a deck, since I just bought (still unopened) this for my deck?
We responded to your questions earlier. It is below.
It is not suggested for decks as it cant take many days to dry and cure.
We used TWP shake and surface sealant on our deck 2-3 years ago. I accidentally bought TWP Shake and vertical surface sealant recently. Are both OK for our deck? Any trouble using the latter over the former? Any preferences between them? Which series is each of these in? Thanks.
Thre is only one version of TWP for shakes and shingles and that is the 200 Series. There has never been a separate version just for decks.
Is TWP acceptable for a grill table? We have two BGE smokers and would like to match the stained floors. If not, what stains have similar color to TWP?
Yes. Make sure the wood is prepped correctly.
Can the 100 series be shipped to Florida?
Yes.
what type of respirator should be used for TWP Oil based stain.
If you want to use a respirator, then make sure it is one that is rated for oil-based products.
What is the difference between your semi-solid and semi-transparent stains? And where is that state list for compliance. Missouri and Ill is of interest.. thanks
The state lists is above on this page. Difference is that the semi solids has higher solid content of color and will give better UV protection.
I am in zip code 82633 and can use TWP 100. Would that still be preferable to TWP 1500 or 200?? Why? I am using it on a rough cut cedar pergola. Thank you!
You can use the 100 Series in WY. Any of the series would work equally well for your area and your rough sawn wood.
can you ship twp semisolid pro series to california???zip 91316
No, not allowed in CA.
My zip code is 22610 can TWP 100 be shipped to me ?
No it cannot.
My zip code is 22508. Can TWP 100 be shipped to me?
No, it cannot. Use the 1500 Series.
Whats the difference between the TWP 100 Series and the TWP Semi-solid Pro-series
TWP 100 series is semi-transparent.
Soon we will have sanded-and-brightened old wavy cedar siding, facing south in Florida, ready to stain, with all-day sun to consider. Picture attached. Am I right in thinking that not only would the Semi-Solid Pro Series be more protective than the 100 but a darker color in the Pro would give the wood even more protection?
No need to sand. Strip and brighen for prep. The semi-solid will give better Uv protection than the 100 Series. Any color will work.
1. Does the deep penetration of 100 “make up” for having less UV protection than the semi-solid? 2. The 100 has some UV protection in it anyway, doesn’t it?
1. No.2. Yes it does.
Which stain for zip code 45244 for Cincinnati, Oh?
1500 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
Culpeper VA 22701…100 series or 1500 series? Not sure of the Northern VA line.
1500 Series.
I just installed a new pressure treated pine split rail fence. It’s rough cut and very dry or “thirsty.” How long should I wait? Thanks
You can stain right away since it is rough sawn cut.
I live in St. Louis, Missouri and have a new cedar wood deck. Should I use TWP1500 series or TWP100 series on new wood, which is better and why?
See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use the 100 Series.
What parts of Arizona are you allowed to ship to ? (Tucson)?
Tucson is okay.
I Live In Ohio, My Zip Code is 44615-9744 can I use TWP100 Series ?
No, you need the 1500 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
Just finished sanding all of a Solid Stain, don’t know what product. An am looking to purchase, but am looking for clarification for future use and what I might buy.
Can a TWP Semi-solid stained deck be re-stained with the same TWP semi-solid stain without stripping off all the old TWP if you use the cleaner and brightner products? Or must you remove all the semi-solid stain completely?
Same with the Regular TWP Stain (not semi-solid), does it need to be completely removed if applying the same product if using the cleaner and brightner?
Yes, you can clean and recoat the semi-solid colors as needed without having to sand. All TWP stains are like this.
So, just to be accurate, in a couple years we can simply use your cleaner on top of the deck then re-apply same TWP. Since not down to the bare wood, no need for brightner.
Yes.
I used TWP-100 on one year old pressure treated deck boards in 2015 (unfortunately we were moving and had to get it done). We moved back and after six years of heavy sun exposure it’s in bad shape and needs to be re-done. How do I best prep these boards for another coat of TWP-100?
Use this kit for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
I am installing PT pine deck posts with composite decking. Will use Genesis restore before staining after pine dries maybe 4-6 months later. Will the Genesis restore or cleaner discolor the composite decking if it gets on it? The decking is Fiberon armourguard. Thanks.
No, the Gemini Kit will not harm the composite but do rinse well with water when done to avoid dirt etc from drying on the composite.

We can ship the 100 Series to WY but not CO. https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series
Can I purchase 100 Series in zip code 23235 (Richmond area) in VA?
We can ship to your area: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series
jersey?
You need the 1500 Series for NJ.
Can you ship 100 series to Wyoming?
Yes, we can.
Based on the comparison chart both 1500 and 200 have the same VOC, why can you not ship 1500 to Canada?
Also wrt 200 series if I go this direction I am looking to preserve the natural look and grain of cedar window casings (new). Hence originally looking at 100 series ceadartone/honey/pecan. Based on the 200 series pigment levels I have concerns it will be too opaque and not let the natural beauty show, any recommendations/advice?
Cheers.
The TWP 1500 is a 350 VOC and the TWP 200 is a 250 VOC. Canada law is 250 VOC. The 200 Series is not opaque but a fully semi-transparent stain like the TWP 1500 Series and will show the natural wood grain and not hide it.
Is Stafford county, Virginia 22406 considered Northern VA? I was interested in the 100 series product
The TWP 100 Series is not allowed there. You will need the TWP 1500 Series.
Live in Southern Ca and have home with redwood siding. Was treated about 10 years ago with WoodRoyal semi transparent oil base stain. Could I use this product without sanding? Have a big house and can it be sprayed with airless sprayer. Thats all painters want to use. What should I do pt prep? the house that doesn’t get much sun looks great but the rest is very dry looking
You will have to remove the current stain first. Strip it and pressure wash to remove. Brightener after.
I have a large deck with railings in the Willamette Valley, a rainy part of Oregon, which needs restaining. 2 years ago we cleaned it with the restore a deck system and stained it with super deck semi-transparent Cedar which seems to be no longer available. After I clean it Olympic deck cleaner this year can I stain it with TWP 100?
No, you have to remove the Super Deck when switching brands. Use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
I am in Virginia. I have a 20 year old deck with the original, 1st generation Trex deck boards. I want to improve the look of them. What do you recommend?
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-semi-solid-pro-series
I live in Michigan what’s going to be more durable the pro series 99semi sold or the 100
The Semi-Solid will give better UV protection from graying.
Hello. I have a 5 year old cedar deck. Heavy sun. I have used Cabot Australian Timber Oil semi transparent for the last 2 applications. Looking to try the TWP 1500 (Massachusetts). The Timber oil has faded in some areas and not so much in others. For this reason, I am going to rent a sander from the Home Depot and take off all the stain. I have already used a deck cleaner and I’m waiting for some better weather before I do a full sanding. My questions are…. What should be my final grit sand paper that would prep the cedar best for the TWP 1500 Semi Transparent Stain? Also would i have to use deck cleaner again after i do the full sanding? Last question. What is the difference in the TWP stain as compared to the Cabot ATO. Thanks.
60 grit is best and then cleaner and a brightener after. Cabot used to be a very good stain until Valspar bought the brand and changed all the formulas for the worse. It just does not have the same quality as it used to.
Thanks for the advice. Staining pad or lambswool for application? Also do need to use that cleaner even though I’ve already used it and then I’m going to sand? Thank you
Stain pad and yes you need to clean and brighten for prep.
when you say clean and brighten… do you mean “restore a deck 2 step system” you sell or just the brightner? Deck has been completely sanded currently with a 80 grit.i’m going to purchase your 5 gallon of 1500 series honeytone. Railings are going to remain a darker cherry.
Both the Cleaner and the Brightener in the Gemini Kit.https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
I have a four year old deck in Pennsylvania that was never stained. it has mold and is very grey. Can I just use the two part Restore a deck and then stain it?
Yes.
Hello, we have a pressure treated deck which has had its share of abuse. We used to seal with Thompson’s, but it lifted and was a constant thorn. We were suffering damage year to year so we made the horrible decision to use deck-over. It worked great for a bunch of years and then the last few years life got in the way of taking care of it. This year, I used a pressure washer and took off as much as possible and will need to scrape off the rest, then sand because it caused deep furrows. I live in upstate New York. What should I use?
You will have to remove it fully by power sanding it all off.
Thank you, yes…I am renting a drum sander. I wasn’t clear with my question. After I finish preparing the deck fully, what product in your line should I then use?
Use the TWP 1500 Series.
I live in Louisiana which is VOC compliant. My question is, is it better to use the 100 series vs the 1500 series?
Either is fine but most use the 100 Series.
Will the new pro series ship to New Jersey ?
No, you will need the 1500 Series.
How do I dispose of old cans of TWP? Will my local hazardous waste collection site accept this?
Let the stain harden inside and then you can throw away in trash. To harden, leave top off to dry or add kitty litter.
Better solution … check with your local landfill disposal site … many take paints and stains – ours does it the 3rd Saturday of each month. No charge to county residents and you know it is being handled correctly.
Can the Series 100 be shipped to southern Indiana, zip 47265?

I live in Illinois. Zip is 62231. Can I use the TWP 100?

Can you TWP 100 series to Alaska? How much
We do not ship to Alaska.
Specifically, can you ship TWP 100 Series to 46033 (Carmel, IN) ?
TWP 1500 Series only. 100 series is not allowed.
Can you ship to area code 46033 (Carmel, IN) ?
Can you ship to area code 23009 in Virginia? As I read the laws, we are outside the emission control areas of Northern Va, Fredericksburg, and Richmond.
Yes.
Previously stained deck (old PTP. Northern VT, south facing) with TWP 100. Any prep concerns before I use 1500 this time? I guess the VOC laws have changed since 2018? Thanks!
For best results, use the Stripper and Brightener Kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Can a sample of Rustic be added to black walnut, both 1500 series, to achieve a slightly redder tint? I’m trying to match a pergola we purchased. Basically, can i mix these colors myself?
Yes you can do this.
