VOC States

by Administrator

VOC (Volatile organic compounds) regulations are changing rapidly across the USA and Canada. Not all of the stains that we sell are compliant for all areas. As it stands 16 US states and Canada have adopted the more stringent 250 regulation:

TWP 100 Series and TWP Semi-Solid Pro-Series is not VOC Compliant for Canada and these USA states and cannot be shipped or used there: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont*, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Northern VA, Pennsylvania, Parts of Arizona, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, all of Canada.

TWP 1500 Series is compliant for all 50 States but cannot be shipped or used in Canada.

TWP 200 Series is compliant for all 50 States and Canada.

*Although Vermont is a member of the Ozone Transport Commission (OTC), they have yet to enact those VOC regulations. Vermont currently observes VOC regulations established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

There is only 115 Honeytone. There is no such thing as 101 Honeytone.

You note that TWP 100 series is not compliant in parts of Ohio. Can TWP 100 series be shipped to Lexington, Ohio, zip code 44904? Thanks.

It is not allowed anywhere in Ohio. You would need the 1500 series for Ohio.

What is the difference between the TWP 100 and TWP 1500? Which would be best for an area that gets blown rain, but is also susceptible to mold and mildew?

TWP Stains

They perform the same. Difference is VOCs and the 1500 is lower VOC and can be used in all states.

In addition to using this for my deck outside I am considering treating a redwood table I made for indoor plants with it. Do you recommend this? If I leave it outside for a week will that clear the VOCs for indoor use?

You can use it on outdoor furniture as long as it is prepped correctly. If you bring the furniture inside, make sure the odor has dissipated.

I’m in Vermont. How does it work that I can buy TWP 101 from a local store but I can’t have the same stain shipped to me because of VOC laws? Thanks.

Although Vermont is a member of the Ozone Transport Commission (OTC), they have yet to enact those VOC regulations. Vermont currently observes VOC regulations established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. You can buy the 100 Series from our site.

I looked back at a previous order and see that I ordered 5 Gal of the 100 Series and also 5 Gal of the 1500 Series. This was for a new deck. Why might I have ordered two different series? One for decking and one for rails?

No idea as there would be no reason to order two different series.

Would one series work better on upright material (eg. a fence)?
I am planning to re-finish my decking this Spring/Summer. The upright materials (rails and a small section of fencing near my deck) are still looking great.

If I cannot figure out which series was applied to decking in round one, does it matter which one I use for this second application (now three years later)?

No, one is not better than the other but you should stick with the same series as used last time. If you do not know, then best to use our stripper/brightener kit for prep.

When switching series, it is best to strip for maximum adhesion and penetration. In terms of difficulty, stripping is no different from cleaning; in fact, it is easier.

I am looking for a clear protectant for rough refined milled cedar laid up vertically. I am in a 4 season climate and want protection for wood but want it to either maintain the new cedar look or conversely weather over 3-5 years to an even driftwood grey–without using any pigment like you Cape Cod. Can the 100 Clear do this for us? Thanks

Yes, it can. Use the TWP 100 Clear or the 1500 Clear.

I live in central Virginia and have tried to order 100 series stain recently to match the 100 stained deck I did last year.  I’m getting responses that tell me they can’t ship 100 series to my address in Virginia.  And yet I see that 100 series is only banned in Northern VA….and I’m nowhere near there.  What’s the deal?  My zip is 23112.

The counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Stafford and cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park observe VOC limitations established by The Northern Virginia Emissions Control Area. Spotsylvania County and Fredericksburg City observe VOC limitations established by The Fredericksburg Emissions Control Area. The counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico and Prince George, and cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Petersburg City and Richmond adhere to VOC limitations established by The Richmond Emissions Control Area. The remainder of Virginia observes VOC limitations established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

If in one of the counties above, you are limited to the TWP 1500 Series.

I’m in Powhatan County but most of my zip code is in Chesterfield County.  I even tried ordering the 100 series from this website last week and got refunded because they said they couldn’t ship it to my address.  I ended up having to order the 1500 series Cedartone and I just hope it matches.

Colors vary drastically based on wood type and age of the wood. Best to test samples to see how it will look on your wood.

Hi…We are using the 1500 series on Red Cedar.  The Dark Oak is still reading too Red and the Black Walnut is too dark.  Can the stain colors be mixed?  If so, how can I cut the Black Walnut to achieve a lighter shade of Walnut and keep the red out?  Thx

Yes, you can mix TWP colors. You would have to test this on your own as we do not have ratios to achieve custom colors. Try the TWP in Clear to lighten the Black Walnut.
